William Throop entered service as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Michigan Infantry on May 1, 1861. He was made captain on August 17, 1861 and was wounded in action at Gaines’s Mill, Virginia the following June. He was made Major on August 30, 1862 and Lt. Colonel on March 18, 1863. Throop was wounded in action at Gettysburg in July of 1863 and at Cold Harbor, Virginia in May of 1864. He was again wounded in action before Petersburg, Virginia on July 30, 1864. Throop was brevetted Lt. Colonel of U. S. Volunteers on August 1, 1864 and made a full Colonel on December 22, 1864. He was mustered out of service and later brevetted Brigadier General on March 13, 1865. Throop was appointed Captain of the 28th U.S. Infantry on July 28, 1866 but declined.
