Cyrus O. Loomis

Loomis enlisted as captain of Battery A, 1st Michigan Light Artillery on May 28, 1861. He was made colonel of the 1st U. S. Regiment Light Artillery on October 8, 1862. The unit became known as the Loomis Battery. Loomis was brevetted Brigadier General of the U. S. Volunteers on June 20, 1865 for gallant and meritorious service during the war.

General Loomis died at the National Military Asylum in Washington, D. C. in 1872. His body was shipped to Detroit by rail and, during the trip, the train wrecked and caught fire. As a result, the body of General Loomis was cremated.
