Brevet Brigadier General

Henry L. Chipman was the son of a Michigan Territorial Supreme Court Justice. He was born in Vermont in 1823 and moved to Detroit with his family in 1824.

Chipman was Captain of the Detroit Light Guard Reserve in 1861. He entered service in the Civil War as Captain in the 11th U. S. Infantry on May 14, 1861. He was transferred to the 2nd Michigan Infantry on May 25, 1861 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Chipman saw battle at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was made Colonel of the 102nd Colored Infantry on April 15, 1864. He was brevetted Brigadier General on March 13, 1865. Chipman was mustered out of volunteer service on September 30, 1865. Following the war, he was made Major of the 3rd U. S. Infantry on May 19, 1881. He retired from military service on February 1, 1887.
