Eugene Robinson was born May 25, 1837 in Binghamton, New York. He came to Detroit with his parents and attended schools here becoming a surveyor and engineer.

Robinson became a member of the Detroit Light Guard in 1857 and, when the first call for troops came in 1861, he enlisted in the 1st Michigan Infantry as a sergeant. He fought at Bull Run and was promoted to Sergeant Major. At the expiration of his enlistment, Robinson returned to Detroit and was made City Surveyor. He was elected Lt. Colonel of the Michigan National Guard on October 6, 1881. Robinson was promoted to the rank of Colonel on July 23, 1885 and to the rank of Brigadier General on October 1, 1890.
