Luther Trowbridge was born in Troy, Michigan on July
28, 1836. His father was a veteran of both the Revolutionary War
and the War of 1812. He was a graduate of Yale, after which he studied
law and was admitted to the Bar in 1858. He married Julia M. Buel
and they had six children.
Trowbridge entered service on September 2, 1862 as a Major in the
5th Michigan Cavalry. He was made a Lt. Colonel of the 10th Michigan
Cavalry on August 25, 1863 and was promoted to Colonel on July 25,
1864. Trowbridge was brevetted Brigadier and Major General on June
15, 1865 for meritorious service during the war. During his years
of service, he participated in battles in Virginia, North Carolina
and Tennessee. He was honorably discharged on September 1, 1865.
After the war, the General was made Provost Marshal of Eastern Tennessee.
He moved his family and, for a time, they settled in Tennessee.
Trowbridge returned to Detroit and re-established his legal career.
President Grant appointed him Collector of Internal Revenue for
Detroit in 1875. He later became comptroller of Detroit and the
vice-president of the Wayne County Bank. He was appointed Appraiser
of the Port of Detroit in 1903, a post that he held until his death
on February 2, 1912 at the age of 75.
